potty training: take 1,423,243

I think we finally conquered it! POTTY TRAINING! I don't know if it was me proclaiming that I would not buy anymore diapers or Jonathan's encouragement to "just hang-out on the toilet and read until the poop comes", but our girl finally uses the toilet. Not the potty chair. The toilet (which was our biggest hurdle).

My mom was in town recently, Hadley was off school and I had a bit of time off, so I was hell bent to tackle potty training.  I bought a Potette and it came with us everywhere. Hadley wore undies, no two ways about it. If she had an accident, we pulled out the spare clothes.

After a few days of hauling the Potette around, I tanked her up with apple juice, took her to the Target toy department and told her I would buy her any toy she wants if she going into the bathroom and pee. ON THE TOILET. After promising to not let her fall in, she went in the toilet. We cheered and left with a Disney dress-up trunk.

Since, Hadley only wears pull-ups for naps (which are rare), overnight and school. Until this past Wednesday when she decided she could go on the toilet like the other kids. Needless to say, I am a super proud mama.

And with this new big-girl accomplishment, comes a whole new level of "I CAN DO IT MYSELF" and sass. But, I'll take it :)

on who-hahs. again.

The other day I had both the girls with me on one of our many trips to Target. And I had to go to the bathroom. Per the usual, I had an audience of two little girls. One of whom speaks in sentences and interested in things pertaining to who-has, poop and princesses. And she became intrigued by what I had to offer...

Hadley: "Mommy? What's that? Is that hair on your who-hah?" she SHOUTED.

Let me remind you... We are in Target. A public bathroom. Two other women were in there. I would have loved to have seen their faces, but I was too busy laughing.

Ahhh... now if she would just go on the potty.

"you need to poop, too?"

Hadley hides when she poops. Usually in the corner of the dining room. And she usually says "I need to go hide." And after will sometimes get a new pull up from the closet and ask to be changed (baffling that she refuses to sit on the potty).

Tonight she announced her need to hide and around the corner she went. Little Hayden followed. In between grunts we hear "you need to poop, too?"

I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants.

potty training day 2 - epic fail

OK, yesterday did not go to well, stalling out at two reward stickers and three accidents. When we realized she was holding her poop and was so devistated about accident number three, we pulled the plug for the day. She refused to go near her potty.

So I'm going to try a new approach... She is going to sit on the potty first thing in the morning before brushing her teeth and at night before brushing her teeth, and we'll ease into it. Maybe she just isn't into the whole shabang all at once! She's certainly ready, just has a funny fear.

Any advice for potty training a fearful toddler?

potty training day 1.5

I've been traveling with the wee one for a few days, but decided that we would hit the potty training hard after our return. And the notion was reinforced when I witnessed an 18 month old using the big potty in a Macy's bathroom.

We needed to do a Target run and while there we picked up the Fisher Price Princess Stepstool Potty. Basically, this thing is a convertible potty - it looks like a big potty with a little plastic bling, when the lid is down it's a stepstool, and when she's ready, it is a potty seat for the big potty. The best part is when she pees or poops (I'm assuming, but it hasn't happened for us yet) in the bowl it plays a song, which makes us all cheer. We also picked up some poster board and princess reward stickers.

The plan was to start the potty training extravaganza today, but she was so excited yesterday afternoon how could I hold her back. She stripped off her pull-up and parked it on her potty. When she was done, she put on her princess panties and we were off!

Today, however, it was a bit more of a struggle to get going. Once we got past the first hurdle, the second came. She did ask for a diaper, which I refused her. She doesn't want to have an accident, but we keep reminding her that accidents are part of learning.

This is kind of like having a puppy...
